I have really enjoyed the last three books I’ve read (besides my English textbooks)
Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri –I was so excited to finally see another book out by her. After reading her first two books, I kept checking up on her hoping she would put a new book out. I kept searching and finding nothing, and then finally I saw Unaccustomed Earth I love all of her stories that I have read. I’m not an immigrant, but who cannot relate to feeling out of place? I love her characters, and I challenge those who say that she uses the same characters in all her stories. Yes, the stories were about Bengali people, but there are many out there saying that there is no need to read this book if you’ve read her others. I say that is completely untrue. I actually started getting up earlier because I really wanted to finish the book. Anyone that knows me, knows that is saying a lot. I found myself effortlessly sympathizing with the characters–a good thing as long as I wasn’ t reading in public.
On Sunday I read Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris I obviously didn’t agree with everything contained in the book. However, I thought it had some amazing ideas. I never ran into the idea that adolescence didn’t have to be the way it was until I had Dr. Zichterman for Child and Adolescent Psychology, and the thought has never left me. These guys did a great job expressing that and giving some very practical ways for teens to get out of their comfort zones and live up to the potential they have.
I am currently reading the Thursday Next series. I just finished Lost in a Good Book by Jasper Fforde. The books are odd. I’ve never read anything quite like them. They aren’t quite in line with my sense of humor, yet I still find them so strangely entertaining. I had heard of them, but never got around to reading them. I have so many books on my to-read list, but my friend Ethan lent me The Eyre Affair to read on the plane over break, and he recently lent me three others that I am working on right now. I recommend the series from what I’ve read so far.
I am also currently reading And the Shofar Blew by Francine Rivers. I like it so far. I think Rivers is an excellent writer at least compared with other current Christian writers.

The school in TX that I wasn’t really interested in called me back to see if I had a position. I’ll pray about it, but I can’t see myself living 15 minutes from Mexico right now. I think I’d rather take the job in China.

I got a phone call from a principal in Indiana today. I’m sending a resume. We shall see…
My boss at Kindercare is willing to hold my job while I am in China so I’m hoping to let her know soon if I won’t be coming back so they can replace me.

We are still waiting to find out if the mass on my grandmother’s liver is cancer. We should hopefully know on Monday. It was a bit of a scare last week, but things are looking more promising now that the colonoscopy has come back clear. It was just so much like what happened with my grandfather right befor he died that we were just shook up a bit.

I keep getting asked the same questions over and over. I just wish I could have a recording and play it back so I wouldn’t be stuck having the same conversation 5 times a day.
The top 6 questions that just won’t go away.
1. How is school going?
2. How cold is it/How much snow is there at Northland?
3. So…anybody special in your life/When are you going to get married/Are you dating/Why are you not dating?
4. Are you finally graduating?
5. What are you doing after graduation?
6. Your Dad letting you drive yet?
My answers
1.Fine. Busier than I thought I would be with only 3 classes.
2. It is colder than PA, but not bad. I just hate the wind. Hopefully the snow will melt soon but experience tells me that we will have snow at missions conference
3. I have a lot of “special” people in my life. Have you met my roommates? Seriously though, not really. I’m not planning on getting married especially since I’m not dating. I’m not dating because no one that I would date has asked me. I think that’s pretty straightforward. There is no good answer to that one.
4. No, not til December but I’ll be done at Northland and will be student teaching in Delaware and finishing up with a correspondence course from BJU
5. No clue. I may get a job offer over in China, but that would require me raising monthly support in a short amount of time. An interesting task as a single female with no job, insurance, or car.
6. Yes and no. Permit, no license.

Pray for my good friend Kelly and her family. I just got back from vacation today and found out that she was in a very serious car wreck on Friday evening. She is in ICU in the hospital. I know she has at least a broken hip, ribs, hand, and a punctured lung. They need to do surgery but are currently unable. I’ll keep you posted. I’ll call the fam tomorrow, and I’ll be in to see her as soon as she gets out of ICU. I used to think car accidents weren’t a huge thing, but I’ve lost several friends to car accidents in the last 5 years. I don’t take safety in traveling for granted anymore.
